How to Use the AlterG Treadmillĭespite its advanced technology, the AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill is surprisingly easy to use. It virtually eliminates any possibility of a fall, and comes with plenty of support surfaces. Thanks to its powerful support, the AlterG also helps pediatric and geriatric patients develop confidence and balance. With the AlterG, patients and their therapists can directly target goals such as walking, running, gait mechanics, weight loss, cardiovascular conditioning, running injury recovery, sports injury recovery, and others. No other form of body-supported therapy has as much precision or versatility, including pool therapy. With the AlterG treadmill, precise calibration is possible that allows the patient to increase or reduce body weight by increments of 1%. How the AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill WorksĪpart from its normal treadmill functions, the AlterG also has a precision pressure-controlled chamber that gently lifts the patient by degrees, taking weight off of their joints. Under the guidance of a trainer or physiotherapist, the patient implements progressive loading ranging from 20% of body weight to 100%, helping the body in recovery and training. The AlterG provides buoyancy and support to a patient while they use the treadmill to exercise. They designed the AlterG to help patients in rehabilitation and undergoing therapy learn to stand, walk, and run again using a treadmill, but much more safely and comfortably. Robert and his son Sean, who at the time was a Stanford engineering student, worked in their garage to create the prototype of the AlterG. He and his team were working to help astronauts exercise naturally in zero-gravity environments using a pressure chamber to simulate gravity.īefore long, Robert realized that the opposite effect could be highly beneficial. ![]() Robert Whalen, father to AlterG’s inventor Sean Whalen, originally worked at NASA’s Ames Research Center. Open a command or terminal window and go to a folder where you want to copy the files. We’re going to download the GitHub repo to our local computer. Make sure it has your username or organization name in it, not the original one. Copy the URL (you can also just grab the repo’s URL from the status bar). Now we’re ready for that big green buttonon the right that says Clone or download. Note the small text stating where the repo is forked from Now that you’ve forked the repo, you should see something like this (but with your account name instead of ‘ardalis’): It’s not bright and green, and it will have some number next to it representing how many people have forked this repository in the past. There’s nothing to prevent you from Cloning the repo you don’t own, but without a Fork it’s much harder for you to contribute to it.Īt the very top of the screen, click on the Fork button. You need to remember to Fork the repository before you Clone it. Note: Even if your experienced with GitHub, it’s easy to mess up the next step. This sounds like you’re stuck, but you’re not. File uploads require push access to this repository. The GitHub repository says Uploads are disabled. Shouldn’t the button have been grayed out? Now, if I click Upload files, I get this helpful dialog: This might be fine for some scenarios, but won’t help me if I’m trying to add a PowerPoint or ZIP file to the site. If I click that button, I’ll get the same experience as if I edited a file, with the one addition being that I can specify a file name. GitHub exposes functionality to let me create a new file. Note buttons for Create new file and Upload files… When I view the main page of the repo, I see this: I’m going to return to Automapper again for this example. So how do you add a new file to a repo you don’t own? Ok, now you’ve seen how to edit a file and you hopefully have at least some idea of what forks and pull requests are. Any additional changes you make in that branch will also become part of that pull request! Thus, it’s best to create a new branch for any particular change, and to keep pull requests small and focused. A common mistake to watch out for, though, is to make a pull request from a branch and then continue working on that branch. You can make pull requests within a repo or between a fork and its parent repo. Instead, you have to request that the owner of the original pull your changes into their repo. When you follow this process, your changes aren’t automatically pushed back to the original repo. You can modify your copy of the original, and then submit your changes to the original repo. You can use a fork of a project as a kind of backup, since it copies the repo to your account.įorking is also used for collaboration. If the original repository continues to be updated, the fork won’t see these updates (at least, not automatically). Two terms you should know are forks/forking and pull requests.Ī fork of a project is a copy of the original at that point in time. ![]() Once you click Propose file change, a pull request will be created and the owner of the repository will have a chance to review your change and either accept it, reject it, or discuss it with you. You’ll be presented with a text editor view of the file, which uses markdown formatting. ![]() Mousing over it reveals:Ĭlick to fork the project and edit the file. Once you’ve clicked on the README.md file, you should see a pencil icon in the top right. Note that you must be logged in for this to work. Well, this page is displaying the contents of, so I first need to click on that file. Let’s say I want to add a link to the home page. I’m going to use a repo that I’m not an owner of as an example – in this case AutoMapper. Most GitHub repositories have a README.md file in their root. If all you need to do is update an existing file, that’s actually pretty easy. Unfortunately, GitHub doesn’t make it extremely easy to discover how to do this if you don’t already know the process and various jargon terms that are involved like “forking” and “pull request” so this post will demonstrate what’s required to simply add a file to a GitHub repo you don’t already own. Frequently, even as a non-developer, you may want to contribute to such repositories, maybe even just as simply as to add a file or perhaps update a text file in your browser. For example, the ASP.NET Core docs, or various awesome lists, or the slides and materials from conferences like Stir Trek. There are a bunch of GitHub (and other git host) repositories that aren’t really for software projects, but rather are for documentation or other resources. ![]() ![]() In terms of the availability of tools and filters, Snapseed provides around 29 filters and tools including the basics like contrast, brightness, etc.Įven under non- non-destructive environment, Lightroom provides more tools and filters than Snapseed with the advantage of easy-to-use sliders to make editing more quick. Millennials, we hear over and over again, are absolutely obsessed with social media, and live their entire social lives through their smartphones. ![]() (“Early” because there’s still a fair amount we don’t know about the youngest Young Millennials given how, well, young they are.) And according to Jean Twenge, a social psychologist at San Diego State University and the author of Generation Me: Why Today’s Young Americans Are More Confident, Assertive, Entitled- and More Miserable Than Ever Before, there’s some early, emerging evidence that, in certain ways, these two groups act like different, self-contained generations. Old Millennials, as I’ll call them, who were born around 1988 or earlier (meaning they’re 29 and older today), really have lived substantively different lives than Young Millennials, who were born around 1989 or later, as a result of two epochal events that occurred around the time when members of the older group were mostly young adults and when members of the younger were mostly early adolescents: the financial crisis and smartphones’ profound takeover of society. ![]() Many, many people who are in their late 20s and early 30s simply don’t feel like they are a part of the endlessly dissected millennial generation.Īs it turns out, there are good reasons for this. And I’ve had plenty of conversations with other people my age who feel the same way. But the more I hear about millennials, the less I recognize myself. I was born in 1983, which means I’m part of the generation, whether one uses the Census Bureau’s definition (born 1982–2000) or Pew’s (about 1981–1997). Technically speaking, I’m definitely a millennial. Over the last few years, though, I’ve found I’m getting less and less of that ping from the term millennial. Vellani, a lecturer in critical writing at the Marks Family Center for Excellence in Writing, has a background in geography and chose to base the course on the concept of the palimpsest in urban studies, where changes in cultural and political dynamics are played out in layers of time and space. But how does one access an 8,000-year-old country with more than 100 million people? For 16 Penn students, one answer was to take Fayyaz Vellani’s Cairo as Palimpsest, a Penn Global seminar that included a week-long trip to Egypt this spring, where students explored the city, visited historic mosques, walked in the walled old city, and, yes, rode camels by the pyramids.
